The Beginning:
Christine and Patrick Chan established the Overseas Helping Hands Foundation in 2003 to support the construction and operation of Bo Ai Elementary School in FungCun Village, Shanxi, China. Before the school's inception, few children from the nearby villages had the chance to attend middle school due to poor performance. The facility, built on village donated land, stands out strikingly from surrounding structures in this area. Standing opposite FengCun Village, it has became a magnet for students, parents and teachers. Presently, Bo Ai enrolls 400 students from thirteen surrounding villages. Bo Ai School evolved to be a shining beacon in education in Shanxi Province, and in 2009, it was awarded the honor of Model School of the Province. In just 3 years, our students improved their average government test scores from 39 to 89. Since Bo Ai school opened its door in 2005, the educational standard for the students has significantly improved. As a result, most of the students progressed to middle and high school. Many students continued on to college and even pursued professional educations.
In 2022, Bo Ai School was transferred to the Shanxi Education Department following changes in China’s government policy and is now under the administration of the Shanxi public school system. Having witnessed the transformative impact of education on the lives of the underprivileged children in Shanxi villages, O.H.H. has undertaken a new mission. Our mission now extends to support schools serving underprivileged children in underdeveloped countries.
